Your host and guide Jose Marti
Jose’s first memories of fishing were as a second grader living in Panama. Using his Mothers homemade bread he would catch a bluegill at a near by lake. He would then cut his catch into small pieces in order to catch a minnow along the lake shore. After several misses he would succeed in hooking a live minnow, which would be thrown over his head onto the rocky shore line due to the nimbleness of his prey. Jose then recalls impaling these prized catches onto a larger hook to throw as far as he might into the lakes abyss. He would then sit back and wait for something memorable to take his offering.
Jose grew up in California and graduated with a Fisheries Biology degree from Humboldt State. After graduating he started working for the National Marine Fisheries Service as an Observer on commercial fishing vessels fishing out of the Bering Sea of Alaska.
Jose visited Chile for the first time in December of 1996 to spend Christmas with his Mother's family. He decided to extend his stay for three months, to travel South with fly rod and rubber waders in hand. The following year he returned to work as a fly-fishing guide, fulfilling his life’s passion. He has been guiding in the XI Region of Chile ever since, starting Chile on the Fly in 2003. In 2004 Jose married Yasna Leiva a native from Coyhaique. Yasna works as an architect in Coyhaique. Jose and Yasna have a baby girl named Fernanda the newest member of the family. Jose, Yasna and Fernanda invite you to one of the most memorable places on earth, Coyhaique, Chile.
